Plants of Costa Rica

Costa Rica has the greatest diversity of plants in the world. With close to one quarter of its landmass being dedicated to protected areas, there is absolutely no shortfall of incredible aquatic or terrestrial plants, flowers, and other epidemic species of plant life that even expert biologists will enjoy and be amazed.

Environmental factors are responsible, at least in part, for this great diversity.  In addition to the tropical latitude of the country and its particular position among two big continental masses and two vast oceans, the combination of geology and climate produce different life zones which are the base for different plant species or plant associations.  Costa Rica’s flora plays an important role in the “ticos” life, being part of their traditions or their medicine, as well as being used as ornamentals. The blossoms of the trees or the delicate orchids will always amaze even the local Costa Rican people!
